SnowBowl, a Dessert Story - Dalston, London

Desserts in London are in a league of their own. Every Summer, lists pop up of the best/newest/ most interesting desserts in London to try. I don’t have a list but I do have a recommendation….

In April 2019, my friend Derek opened his own dessert parlour in Dalston, East London. Called SnowBowl, it brings a cool bit of the Far East to Hackney.

SnowBowl serves bingsu ("snow-bowls"), a Korean dessert consisting of flavoured shaved ice with toppings. SnowBowl also does “soft serve” (i.e. ice-cream) as well as hot and cold beverages. The menu is not too extensive; there is a variety without feeling too overwhelmed.

The snow-bowls are freshly made within minutes of you making your order. So far, I have tried the choco oreo and the sweet mango snow-bowls. They both tasted lovely; the flavour is subtle and sweet. I am favouring the sweet mango snow-bowl at the moment, especially in the sunny weather; however I look forward to trying other flavours.

SnowBowl is a small venue; however, it is calm and quiet, and there is space to enjoy your dessert with a friend or just watch the world pass by. That being said, there is something “loud” about the SnowBowl and that is its neon sign:

It contrasts against the cool interior, yet compliments it. The sign is unique and a great backdrop for instagrammable pics of your snow-bowl (before you eat it up).

And it speaks the truth – there is no place like Hackney (yes, I'm being biased but I don't care!) x

SnowBowl can be found at 505 Kingsland Road, E8, 4AU.
